I found the process of applying for loan consolidation a really daunting task, but Earnest made that process easier to deal with than other loan companies. It was super straight forward, and felt like a blessing in disguise considering the hell my current loan servicers were putting me through. One thing that was confusing about this process once I was approved for a loan, I wasn't given a date for when the loan would offically transfer over to Earnest from my old loan servicers. I ended up getting an email a week later so it wasn't much of an issue, but there wasn't much clarification in the loan agreement documents that I received after approval.

I have been with Earnest since 2021 and refinanced my loan, which significantly reduced my interest rate. Their customer service, whether via chat or email, is responsive, typically addressing inquiries within 24 hours or less. However, I would not recommend refinancing your loan with this company if you plan to return to school. Currently, I am in a PA program, and my school only provides semester-based verification, not year-long verification. As a result, Earnest recognizes me as a full-time student only during the active semester, which limits loan deferment to that specific period. Unlike other student loan companies, Earnest does not offer a 6-month grace period, something I only realized after starting school. Additionally, their deferment requirements are more complicated than expected. While they do accept a school letterhead confirming enrollment, they also require verification through the National Student Clearinghouse. Unfortunately, the Clearinghouse does not update enrollment information immediately after a semester ends, causing unnecessary delays and complications. This has made managing loan deferment while attending school, especially without working, particularly challenging. Once I complete my PA master’s degree, I am likely to refinance with another company if I decide to pursue further education, such as a doctorate.

This is my second loan with Earnest, that should say a lot there. Application process was easy and not drawn out. Once approved, choosing our (had a cosigner) repayment options was nice, easy, and Earnest lets you know each stage you are at. They let me know (by email) when my loan info was sent to my college, when my college certified it, and when it was disbursed. I have also spoke with customer service by phone in the past, and they are excellent. Earnest is a fantastic lender for private student loans.
